Trailing livestock with trailers
Towing and hauling livestock from one place to the other can be a tricky affair if the appropriate livestock trailer is not used. These trailers are vehicles used for transporting livestock, cattle and for the same they have a hold-up to fix it to the main vehicle that pulls it or allows it to trail behind.
The most common form of livestock trailer is designed on the simple model of a rectangular shaped box with closed bottom. The walls of the box rise high to the level of the height of the animals to be enclosed but have regular openings on these walls above the said height for aeration purpose. They are open from the top and have adjustable opening walls to adjust to the height of the animals. Initially made from wood, these are now made from galvanized material ensuring durability and convenience of use. Many livestock trailers are designed for providing a smooth transport journey for the animals. Some come with compartments and padding to enable them to stay upright and maintain good physical condition.
History from the beginning to our days
Right from its unveiling around the 1750s till today, many changes have taken place in designing this trailer. From a simple wooden box that had wheels attached to it, to the modern form of durable wagon made from galvanized metal, these trailers have been a part of the agricultural practices. Studebaker brothers are credited with bringing out for the first time these agricultural multi-purpose trailers. There are modifications available with these livestock trailer to enable easy use. Some of these have hydraulic axle which allow easy reclining and easy exit for the animals. Others come with padding and anti-slip grip while others have sound-proof material to offer more comfort to the animals.
While thinking of models and makers of these trailers, few are the prominent ones that find their name in the list. From the traditional Hand-made to the Lyonnet make, there are few makers like Masson, Mazeron, Hauswirth , Bruneau and Demarest being the latest model maker.
Bruneau has launched its models in various years and Demarest being launched recently, they are designed with hydraulics and vary in length from 16 feet to 17 feet respectively. Alternatively Mazeron models are designed without hydraulics and are with interior and exterior door swings. Hauswirth models have external retractable barrier bridges and are without hydraulic.
